This is such a lovely post. I read and loved Rosemary Sutcliff's 'Sun Horse, Moon Horse' when I was little - which I think is *such* a wonderful and chilling way of thinking through what might be behind this tradition. And when I was driving up past Kilburn to my IVF clinic, I passed the white horse every time, and it felt like a talisman.

Wow...I just LOVED this; fantastic research for sure, but so much more. Thanks for this excellent read...I was immediately hooked (being an archaeologist helps a bit, methinks!)...

One of the most beautiful and wonderous aspects of our nation. I love the Uffington horse like she's a personal friend 🫶 I have her on a decal on the back windshield of my car. Great article.

I live ten minutes away from the Uffington Horse and she is every bit as magickal and mystical as you can imagine, and such a comforting presence on the hillside, she looks over our town, our town hall, the church, and doctors surgery, she's painted onto our buildings and embroidered into the uniform of our primary school... she's so special to us all and very much a part of our local modern culture. Loved this article 🤍

Probably my favourite article you've written. It's so charming to think of the horses with their own little characteristics, histories, and identities!

What a fantastic read, I saw the Marlborough horse not too long ago and I made a mental note to look into all this. I’d completely forgotten, of course, so I’m very happy your article galloped in just in time!
